We don't think much about Car Insurance. It is just a monthly bill we pay.  Auto insurance is all about managing risk.  It is not accidental (pun intended) that driving without demonstrating your financial ability to pay for any damage is illegal.  No one plans to get into an accident, but they happen. Auto accidents can leave no mark or kill all people involved.  And so it is with COVID-19; people might be infected and not know it or die in a hospital.

Insurance comes in two flavors, Liability or Comprehensive.  Liability protects others, and comprehensive protects you. We don't complain about the government requiring insurance because we all are protected. Why is COVID different?

Let's start with washing our hands.  We learned this in the mid-1800s, about 30 years before the invention of the phone. Hospital nurses started using masks in the early 1900'about the time the Ford Model T came out.

We then eradicated smallpox with a vaccine. It was administered with a scary bifurcated needle that caused a scar. I don't have the scar, but my mom does. I wasn't around when Polio was putting healthy people in wheelchairs. We have eradicated these two known viruses with a vaccine. Maybe this is an oversimplification, but shouldn't we protect each other and ourselves during a pandemic when death is an actual outcome? For those who take the counterargument, they say it won't happen to me.

No one wants to get into an auto accident.  Yet it happens a lot.

Approximately 1.35 million people die in road crashes each year; on average 3,700 people lose their lives every day on the roads.
More than half of all road traffic deaths occur among vulnerable road users—pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

What strikes me from above is that the vulnerable are most likely to die. Given our knowledge of germ theory, we should also expect that the most vulnerable will get COVID.  This exact thing is currently playing out where I live.  My wife is a Nurse's Assistant, and she sent me a video from the director of her hospital. In the video, the director explained that 98% of the people in critical care with COVID are not vaccinated.

As of this writing  (October 2021), 4.5 Million have died in this pandemic accident.

I know this post won't change anyone's COVID opinion, but opinions will change over time. Some opinions last longer than others. Keep in mind some people believe the World is flat. At least we no longer believe in bloodletting that was around for 3,000 years.
